Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times: read John 13;

The followers of the Lord Jesus, such as Simon Peter became confidant about themselves as saw them share authority of the Lord Jesus as a part of His team. They didn’t realize that they won’t be able to enjoy such power should the Lord Jesus leave them. Peter said that he would lay down his life for the Lord Jesus. But the Lord Jesus warns that he would end up denying him;

See also Ex 34:29-30 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD. A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another: read John 13;

The Lord Jesus has shown His love even to someone who turns his back and betrays Himself. He has washed their feet even when they didn’t understand what He was doing. Then, He commands them to love one another as He loved them;

• What could we observe the way the Lord Jesus has loved the people/world? See also Phil 2:6-8 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death– even death on a cross!

• What could we observe the heart of man from the way Simon Peter couldn’t keep his vow to love Him? See also Mt 26:74-75 Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out: read John 13;

The Lord Jesus has washed their feet and commanded them to wash each other’s feet just as He has shown an example. Yet, Judas Iscariot took the morsel of bread the Lord Jesus [assed on to him and went out to go to the High priests to deliver Him to them;

Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them: read John 13;

The Lord Jesus has shown a consistent example of servant leadership as He went into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey, became a servant who washes their feet. Those lesson, as well as an example, were radical to touch their hearts, yet the Lord promises no blessing to the one who knows/understand them. He promised a blessing to those who practice them;

Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it–he will be blessed in what he does.

Unless I wash you, you have no part with me!: read Jn 13;

Though Peter has had a bath and his whole body was clean, he still needed to have the Lord Jesus wash his feet! For one needs to have his feet washed by the Lord Jesus afresh each day that he might enjoy the abundance the Lord Jesus meant to grant him. Even as a born again believer, we can’t do it on our own;

Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love: read John 13;

The Lord Jesus knew that the time for Him to return to the Father from this world has come. He has shown them the full extent of His love. He took the role of the lowest servant and washed the feet of His followers who ate the Passover without having their feed washed;

And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.

Death, secret to fruitful life: review of John 12: read your journal;

The Lord Jesus’ teaching for fruitful life is death. He who loves his life in the world will lose it, but who falls to the ground and die will produce much fruit. But, who cares about fruit if he should die for the sake of fruit-bearing. Read your note over the week/ John 12 and see ‘What the Lord has spoken to you over the week’ and ‘How you’ve responded to His voice’ as well;

• What has the Lord spoken to you about your gift to Him as a token of the devotion of your heart to Him?

• What has the Lord spoken to you about your impact on the lives of the people around?

• What has the Lord spoken to you about your humility among people around?

• What has the Lord spoken to you about your sacrifice for the sake of producing fruit for Him?

• What has the Lord spoken to you about your devotion to the word of God in life?

• What is an application you need to carry out in life in response to His word?

I know that his command leads to eternal life: read John 12;

The word of the Lord Jesus is not something He spoke on His own, but He had received what to say from God the Father. The Intimacy between the Father and the Son caused Him to say exactly what God would say in each circumstance.

• What could we observe the way our first parents lost eternal life? See also Gen 3:22-23 And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.

• What could we observe the impact of the word of the Lord? See also Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

• What could we learn about the importance of the scripture in our life? See also 2 Tim 3:16-17 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

• What is the Lord Jesus saying to you about your intake of the Word that you may enjoy eternal life?

• What do you want to do in response to His word?

Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light: read John 12;

Even after the Jesus had done many miraculous signs in their presence, they would not believe in Him. And the Lord said in danger of His own security, to put their trust in the Light/Himself while they still have it/Him. But Their eyes were blind and their heart have been hardened!

• What could we observe God’s attitude about heartless performance of religious practice? See also Isa 29:13 The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men. Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder; the wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.

• What could we observe the way people’s eyes have been blind and their hearts hardened? See also 2 Cor 4:3-4 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

• What would help us to put in the light/ the Lord Jesus in spite of the darkness that has overwhelms the heart of the people? See also Ps 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

• How may we follow example of the Psalmist each time we approach the throne of the grace of God? See also Ps 119:18 Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.

• What is an area of your life that the Lord Jesus is showing to walk in the light?

• What do you want to do in response to His word?

But if it dies, it produces many seeds: read John 12;

When some Greeks came to seek His audience, the Lord Jesus talked about getting glorified by God the Father. But His concept to be glorified by God was through suffering and death. And the Lord Jesus says that He has come for that. His mission was to become a grain of wheat that falls to the ground and die to bear many fruits!

• What could we observe the Mission of the Messiah from the way the prophet prophesied? See also Isa 53: 5-6
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds, we are healed.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

• Unlike the contemporary view of the Messiah of the time what has the Lord Jesus said from the beginning of His Ministry about His Mission? See also Jn 3:14-15 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.

• What is the Lord saying to us about how we could impact the world around us? See also Rom 5:18-19 Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
